What is Reiki?

Reiki means ‘Universal Energy,’ with ‘Rei’ translating to Universal and ‘Ki’ to Energy. Reiki is a positive energy healing method where a Reiki Master or practitioner directs a person’s life energy combined with universal energy through their whole being. Universal energy is the natural energy that flows through all living things.

A Short History Lesson

This positive energy healing practice has existed for about 2,500 years. In the early 1920s, Mikao Usui structured, refined and named the practice as Reiki. Since then, Reiki has helped millions of people worldwide.

How Reiki Works

My name is Christina and I’m an attuned Reiki Master Teacher of the Mikao Usui lineage. I conduct Reiki sessions by starting from the crown and directing the energy with intention through the energy centers (chakras) and surrounding organs to clear away blockages, calm, heal and balance as it moves down to the toes.

The main purpose is to relieve whole being tension, energetically and physically. When a person’s whole being relaxes, your nervous system calms down and your immune system works better. This promotes better pain and stress management, better responsiveness to treatments, and more effective healing.

In my practice I have found that the deep-healing side of most people’s life energy has been lying dormant most of their lives. It normally takes one to two sessions to break through the life energy’s first energetic blocks and another two sessions for it to be fully responsive. I spread sessions out two days apart to give the energy a chance to work.

What Reiki can do

During the first two sessions, Reiki can already improve sleep and reduce stress. Once blockages have been cleared, it can relieve deep emotional pain, bring calmness during illness and help the body accept medication that it previously rejected. Here is a review from Madagascar:

Ronel

‘I have received 4 Reiki distance sessions from Christina over the last 7 days, and every time she does a session, I sleep well. I have an illness and it keeps me up at night, so sleeping is such a relief to my system! Apart from the sleep, I can breathe better and my pain seems less. The medication seems to be working better now. I have more energy and today, I am going on my first walk in a long time.‘

Reiki sessions can also provide peace at the end of life. It helps people move from fear to acceptance, allowing them to make amends and find closure where needed. Sessions for family members can help give them strength when having to say goodbye to a loved one. Here is a review from South Africa:

‘My brother got sick in March and was taken to hospital. He was scared when the ambulance came to fetch him, and got worse quickly. He was in ICU for 28 days and in a coma for most of it. Christina started doing Reiki distance sessions for him and he woke up after the third session. He was peaceful and even though he could not talk, he nodded and smiled at me while we were making amends. He passed away peacefully a few days later. Thanks for helping my brother.‘

Reiki is also helpful to people who decide not to take medication, by relieving their tension and helping them cope with pain.

Energy knows no boundaries

Because Reiki energy knows no boundaries, most of the Healing and Attunement sessions I conduct are for people in other cities, provinces and overseas, all from a distance. And with great results! I do conduct Reiki sessions in person to people in my city by doing house calls.

Still have doubts or questions about Reiki? The next section covers the most common misconceptions.

Misconceptions You Need to Know

When people ask ‘What is Reiki?’, they often hear misconceptions that don’t reflect the truth about Reiki. Below are helpful answers to some of the most common ones.

It’s anti-religion and goes against religious principles.

INCORRECT. Reiki is a positive energy healing method that uses universal life energy to help people. It does not replace prayer or induce worshipping of other ‘’gods’’. Many Christians and people from other religions sign up for Reiki sessions and some even study to be Reiki Masters.

It works against medicine

FALSE. Reiki calms a person’s nervous system, which in turn boosts immunity and helps medicine to work more effectively. In many countries, this positive, complementary form of healing is offered in hospitals as part of a patient’s treatment program. There are over 800 hospitals in the US alone that offer Reiki as treatment. Hospitals in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Brazil, Japan, Australia, and many other countries also offer Reiki to patients.

Reiki is just placebo

NOT TRUE. Reiki has been studied in hospitals and wellness centers worldwide. Many people report benefits that go beyond expectations. This includes reduced anxiety, increased peace, more energy, pain relief, and improved sleep.

It’s a cure-all

INCORRECT. Reiki works with people’s life energy, but it does not always do what we want it to do. Sometimes it might only calm a person’s nervous system and nothing more. And sometimes it heals. It depends on how weak or strong the person’s energy is, and whether they are nearing the end of their life.

Reiki can harm

FALSE. Reiki is a positive energy healing method and can help everyone. It works with a person’s life energy to remove negative energy, reduce anxiety, and relieve emotional and physical pain. In doing so, it gives the whole being a deep clean. Sometimes during and after sessions people may feel sensations such as warmth, tingling, lightness, or even emotional release with tears. These are normal signs of energy cleansing and balancing and are not harmful. Recipients learn grounding routines to do after their sessions. These practices help keep the body and mind steady during energy cleansing.

You need to believe in it for it to work

NOT TRUE. Reiki flows whether someone has faith in it or not. Even skeptical recipients often feel calmer and more peaceful after a session.

Reiki is forced on people

INCORRECT. Reiki is always offered with respect. Practitioners and Masters get permission before conducting a session, and the recipient chooses whether to receive it. If a family member of someone who is comatose, sick or incapacitated requests sessions, that is considered permission. Consent is important in Reiki.

It drains the practitioner’s energy

FALSE. Reiki practitioners do not give away their own energy. They channel universal life energy, which is limitless. After conducting a Reiki session, I don’t feel drained; I feel happy and energetic.
